JOB DESCRIPTION:
We are seeking a skilled consultant to provide expert guidance in a specialized field, requiring a deep understanding of industry best practices and innovative solutions. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills, extensive experience in the relevant domain, and the ability to deliver actionable insights tailored to client needs. Responsibilities include conducting thorough research, analyzing complex data, developing strategic recommendations, and presenting findings in a clear and compelling manner. Proficiency in relevant tools and methodologies, along with exceptional communication and project management abilities, is essential. A proven track record of successful project delivery and stakeholder engagement will be highly advantageous.
Over the past three decades, Ghana has experienced a marked decline in climatic conditions, a trend that is expected to intensify further. Climate change poses significant threats to agricultural productivity, economic stability, and food security, with its effects worsening progressively from coastal areas toward the northern Savannah. Additionally, it undermines access to essential water supplies and critical infrastructure while amplifying the spread of diseases. The Northern and Volta regions, where SIGMA operates, rank among Ghana’s most climate-vulnerable areas. Marginalized populations—particularly those reliant on natural resources or residing in high-risk zones—face disproportionate impacts and possess limited adaptive capacity, including women, girls, and the Fulani ethnic minority engaged in pastoralist livelihoods.
In this role, SIGMA will enhance the resilience of Ghanaian citizens—especially women, girls, and vulnerable populations—by expanding investments in inclusive and gender-responsive climate adaptation efforts. The initiative will first deliver technical assistance and capacity-building support to fortify governance structures and national systems within key Ghanaian public institutions, alongside awarding direct grants to five districts to finance localized, gender-inclusive climate adaptation projects. Additionally, SIGMA will collaborate with regional government stakeholders in the Northern and Volta regions to bolster the capacity of targeted districts in designing, executing, and documenting climate adaptation initiatives. Furthermore, the project will engage with Ghanaian women-led civil society organizations to amplify women’s participation, representation, and leadership in governmental decision-making processes.
DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION
Reporting directly to the Team Leader and collaborating with the Environment and Climate Change Specialist, the Engineering Consultant will ensure the design and construction of climate-resilient infrastructure in rural communities—such as solar-powered boreholes, solar-powered irrigation systems, pedestrian bridges, word-processing facilities, and additional projects—meet high-quality standards. The consultant will deliver technical guidance to district stakeholders and conduct rigorous quality assurance for district-level climate adaptation initiatives, verifying that feasibility studies, project designs, and implementation plans incorporate climate resilience and environmental safeguards. Additionally, the consultant will evaluate relevant contracts and monitor construction activities to confirm compliance with environmental mitigation measures.
