Over the past three decades, Ghana has experienced a pronounced decline in climatic conditions, with projections indicating further deterioration. Climate variability poses significant threats to agricultural productivity, economic stability, and food security, with its most severe consequences intensifying from coastal areas toward the northern Savannah. Additionally, it undermines access to potable water, disrupts essential infrastructure, and heightens the spread of diseases. The Northern and Volta regions, where SIGMA operates, rank among the most climate-vulnerable areas in Ghana. Marginalized populations, particularly those reliant on natural resources or residing in high-risk zones—such as women, girls, and the Fulani pastoralist minority—face disproportionate impacts and limited adaptive capacity.
SIGMA will enhance the resilience of Ghanaian citizens—especially women, girls, and other vulnerable populations—by scaling up investments in inclusive and gender-responsive climate adaptation measures. The initiative will first deliver technical assistance and capacity-building support to bolster governance and institutional frameworks within key entities of the Ghanaian Public Administration while also awarding direct grants to five districts to finance locally led, gender-inclusive climate adaptation projects. Additionally, SIGMA will collaborate with regional authorities in the Northern and Volta regions to strengthen district-level capacities for designing, executing, and monitoring climate adaptation initiatives. Furthermore, the project will engage with Ghanaian women-led civil society organizations to amplify women’s participation, representation, and decision-making influence in public policy processes.
